Name: Mark Capper
Job Title: Support Analyst
Staff Superlative: Most likely to wear a t-shirt in the winter (Put another way: according to Mark, the Support office is rarely, if ever, chilly! Other Support team members beg to differ.)

If I could do anything for a day, I would:
Ooooh, definitely get away to the mountains, find a secluded cabin (no cell service!), and set up there with nothing but my guitar, hymnal, Bible, and a pen and notebook. Sure, I enjoy watching a fun film or playing a competitive game with friends, but the best day for me would be spent in complete musical seclusion, surrounded only by the beauty and stillness of creation.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Is it cliché to say what I most enjoy about my job is the people? Even though my job is to interact with people all day? Yes? Well, I’ll say it anyway! Seriously, though, you will be hard-pressed to find a more pleasant, hilarious, friendly, generous and caring group of folks with whom to work. I have worked with unpleasant people before, under vastly different circumstances, and it is no fun at all. Having a tight-knit community here really helps me to excel as I assist customers in meeting needs for their own communities. Knowing that I get to play a part in helping the organizers on our site reach and impact people really makes every hour and every minute of work deeply fulfilling.

How have you seen SUG organizers change the world?
Let me tell you, as a result of countless interactions with our customers directly, I have witnessed some amazing work being accomplished by these people and organizations, who are utilizing our site to bring their groups together and meet incredible needs. People are actively committed to achieving wonderful goals through the use of our site, whether orchestrating disaster relief efforts, gathering people for local community service opportunities, setting up time slots for parent teacher conferences, or organizing concession-stand volunteers for sporting events. I am simply humbled and grateful to play a small part in our customers’ big picture purposes, regardless of how those may differ from one to another.

Of our six core values, which one stands out the most to you? How do you see people in the company embodying it?
That’s a no-brainer! The core value of SignUpGenius that stands out the most to me is our commitment to “Advance the missions of others with our success.” Wow! Is that not awesome? Consider this core value again: “Advance the missions of OTHERS with our success.” One of the reasons I wanted to come work for this company was because of the intentionally other-centered, outward focus. We are not striving to “advance our own mission through our own success,” but rather, primarily, we are seeking to use our success to drive others forward. That is the very definition of servant leadership, a virtue that SignUpGenius puts into practice excellently. Through every day-to-day interaction and endeavor, each person in the company demonstrates this outward focus as well, never viewing our work as a competition nor our coworkers as rivals, but serving one another. We share the same purpose and work together as a team toward this common goal in our collective service toward our customers.

What’s a funny story or favorite memory you have from working at SUG?
Every year at Halloween, we have a company-wide contest and compete to win various prizes for our costumes. Last year, everyone on the support team, true to form with our diligent work in customer support “like hamsters on a wheel,” dressed up as hamsters and decorated the Support office to resemble a hamster cage! I even worked to create a nearly human-sized hamster wheel, the final piece of the puzzle to complete our costume, and we actually ended up winning the contest! The grand finale came at Christmastime, when I wrapped up the hamster wheel and submitted it for the office White Elephant gift exchange. The huge wrapped gift had everyone excited at first…until someone opened the box! I had stuffed some other goodies in there though, so they weren’t just stuck with an oversized hamster wheel. That will always be a favorite memory of mine from working at SignUpGenius.

What was your favorite day while working at SUG?
There are way too many to count. I think I honestly have to say that I do not have just one favorite day at SignUpGenius, because there have just been far too many fantastic days for one to stand out above the rest. However, I do think that team outings of one sort or another are always my favorite, whether we’re going to volunteer at Brookstone School or Christian Adoption Services, or going to play laser tag or go bowling. While I am immensely grateful for each person on the Support team and for the amount of time I get to spend with them regularly, these outings give me an opportunity to spend time with my coworkers from other departments, many of whom I am not able to interact with nearly as often.

At the same time, though, there is always a certain magic in each day at SignUpGenius, especially through little laughs and jokes among the Support team, that tend to make every day just a tiny bit better than the one before. So, with that in mind, I suppose today is my favorite day at SignUpGenius.
